Megastar Chiranjeevi Konidela, a dominant figure in Telugu cinema, has captivated audiences with his exceptional acting, action and dance skills throughout his mega film career. Despite his success in the Telugu film industry and his notable performances in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada films, he chose to stay away from Bollywood. On his birthday, let’s explore why Megastar Chiranjeevi never returned to Bollywood despite his impressive hattrick record in the industry.
Chiranjeevi began his cinematic journey with the Telugu film Punadhirallu (1978) but gained widespread fame with Khaidi (1983). His consistent success in Telugu cinema led him to Bollywood, where he made his debut with the 1990 film Pratibandh, a remake of the Telugu hit Ankusam. He continued his Bollywood journey with hits like Aaj Ka Goondaraj (1991), a remake of his own film Gang Leader and The Gentleman (1992), a remake of S. Shankar’s Tamil film Gentleman. These successes seemed like a hat trick for Chiranjeevi in Bollywood.
In a rare interview with Lehren, Chiranjeevi shared about his Bollywood career and his deep affection for the industry and its audience. He mentioned his willingness to work in Bollywood in a “1:3 ratio” — one film in Hindi and three in Telugu each year. Further, Chiranjeevi stated that he would have done more Hindi films if he had received good scripts. However, he was cautious about accepting projects and waited for scripts that met his standards.
Later in 2019 promotions for Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy‘s teaser launch event held in Mumbai, when asked about why he did not act in Bollywood more frequently despite his success, Chiranjeevi expressed his confusion about why he did not return to Bollywood sooner and explained that he did not find suitable scripts during that time. He also mentioned that his commitment to Telugu films and his involvement in politics kept him occupied. But he was pleased that Sye Raa was released on a grand scale in Hindi.
Megastar Chiranjeevi’s dedication to his regional cinema and his political career kept him away from focusing more on Bollywood. Despite this, he remains a beloved figure in the film industry. Recently, his 22-year-old film Indra was re-released, breaking records around nation and internationally, continuing to captivate his global fanbase.
