Mardaani 3 Movie Review:
The promo was misleading, making it seem like a big screen repetition of what was recently seen in Delhi Crime 3. In DC3, it was lady cop Shefali Shah pitted against venomous don Huma Qureshi while busting a human trafficking syndicate. Same to same in the promo of Mardaani 3 as Rani Mukerji roared into action against a menacing Amma (Mallika Prasad) to finish a human trafficking cabal.
However, director Abhiraj Minawala manages to make it feel different with a bit of a twist in the villain’s den and much help from Rani Mukerji who is in peak, believable form. Apart from performing with fire, Rani is no fragile wisp. She looks like she can really land a solid punch. And she does it with the ferocity of a tigress protecting her cubs.
It also helps that Aayush Gupta, Deepak Kingrani and Baljeet Singh Marwah write a straightforward crime-busting film that does not get distracted by the lady cop’s personal life.
Keeping in line with earlier editions of the franchise, YRF experiments with a fresh face for villainy. Amma Mallika Prasad does not miss a beat in her cruelty as she heads a kidnapping racket that goes beyond trafficking.
A socially inclined US-returned Ramanujum (Mikhail Yawalkar) who pitches in to help Shivani get Amma and lady constable Fatima (Janki Bodiwala) spring their surprises at different times and do it with efficiency.
The film does have its elements of predictability. Minority loyalties are above suspicion, always. Whether it’s in Nikkhil Advani’s Rocket Boys or Excel Entertainment’s Yudhra or in a YRF film, inclusivity is inserted with expected sameness.
The theme of human trafficking or Indians being a dispensable commodity for clinical experiments is not a pathbreaking cinematic crime. However, Shivani’s sharp ways of cracking a case make it interesting especially at the beginning and then comes a twist that has its own intrigue.
The end is a stretch. Shivani’s in-your-face feministic monologue as she thrashes the villain may be designed for gender awards but when she demands, “Har baar ladki kyun?” you wonder if the crime would’ve been forgivable if little boys had been nabbed instead of young girls. Crime truly should have no gender.
Mardaani 3 – Watch Or Not?: Yes. For Rani Mukerji’s fiery, credible performance and for an edition that adds value to the franchise.
Mardaani 3 Movie Review Score Rating: 3 out of 5 (i.e. 3/5)
