“Karisma Kapoor Didn’t Deserve…”: Sunjay Kapur’s Sister Mandhira Slams Priya Sachdev For Destroying His Marriage With Karisma

Mandhira Kapur Smith opens up on late brother Sunjay Kapur’s troubled marriages, family’s disapproval and regrets over Karisma Kapoor.

Late industrialist and billionaire Sunjay Kapur’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith has spoken about her brother’s personal life in the recent interview, opening up on his marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor and his later relationship with Priya Sachdev. In a heartfelt conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Mandhira shared emotional details about the family’s disapproval of Sunjay’s third marriage and her own regrets from that time.

Mandhira revealed that Sunjay’s relationship with Priya Sachdev caused deep turmoil in the family especially when he was still married to Karisma Kapoor. Reflecting on that phase, she said,
“For another woman to not care about a woman who’s just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt the family is in bad taste… You don’t break up a happy marriage. Not even a happy marriage, you don’t break up a marriage that is trying to work on keeping a family together. When you’ve got a child, you’ve just had another child, you step aside and say, ‘You know what?’ Or you encourage the man to go back and make it work. You don’t destroy a marriage. And Lolo did not deserve that.”

Sunjay Kapur’s sister further added that Karisma Kapoor worked hard to make the marriage work and didn’t deserve the pain that followed her. Further Mandhira shared that their late father Surinder Kapur was firmly against Sunjay’s relationship with Priya Sachdev, as she recelled adding, “Dad was totally against Priya. He said, ‘He can never marry her. I don’t ever want to see her face. And they can’t have children.’ Nobody in this family stood by them getting married”.

She also mentioned that she and her sister didn’t attend Sunjay and Priya’s 2017 wedding in New York. “If Dad was here, this wouldn’t even have happened. If he was here, Priya won’t be a part of this family,” she said. In the same interview, when asked about her relationship with Karisma, Mandhira admitted that they had drifted apart during the turmoil. “I feel bad because she was my best friend. I wish I’d taken more of a stand for her, because she was my best friend, and I should have stood up for her,” she said.

After Sunjay Kapur’s passing in June 2025, a legal dispute began over his estate which is reportedly worth over whopping ₹30,000 crore. Priya Sachdev presented a will in court which was challenged by Karisma’s children Samaira and Kiaan Kapur.

Mandhira remarked that instead of uniting the family, Priya “tried to separate everything and take over,” adding, “At the end of the day, this is my mother’s estate. This is not her husband’s estate.”
