Jeremy Renner and Sonni Pacheco’s relationship made headlines again as the actor finally spoke up about the serious accusations made during their divorce. In a new interview with The Guardian, the 54-year-old actor shared how the public allegations deeply affected him calling them “hurtful” and “dehumanizing.”
Actor Jeremy Renner and a Canadian model Sonni Pacheco were married in 2013 but filed for divorce just 10 months later. During the custody battle for their daughter Ava (now 12) Pacheco accused him of threatening to kill her and himself and of substance abuse – allegations that Renner has strongly denied. Clarifying these claims were not true but “people assumed they were” due to these allegations being repeated often. He added, “The truth gets lost when headlines take over.”
Opening up about the mental toll, the Marvel actor said, “Whatever stress I’ve had in life I’ve tried to find a way of laughing through it. And that’s where sometimes cynicism comes out – you think, ‘I’m just going to have a laugh at this stuff.’” When asked what he exactly meant, he clarified, “Being accused of things you’ve not done, right? That doesn’t feel good to anybody. It certainly doesn’t feel good when you’re a celebrity and it’s known to everybody.”
He continued, “It’s all the salaciousness that happens out there. It’s clickbait, and it hurts my feelings and it dehumanizes people.”
Though Jeremy and Sonni went through a very public legal dispute, the actor said he never feared losing custody. “That’s just lawyers talking. That’s lawyers arguing. The custody was easy,” he added. Renner also emphasized that he chooses to ignore outside noise, saying “It doesn’t matter to me what people say… I don’t read reviews, I don’t read comments. I don’t care. That’s not part of my life.”
Despite the past controversies, Renner seems focused on moving forward with privacy and peace.
