Housefull 5 Movie Critic Review:

The setting is lavish. But murders aboard a cruise are not novel. Nor is the mystery over who’s Jolly, the true successor of a dead billionaire. In this case, 100-year-old birthday boy Ranjeet (played by villain Ranjeet) who’s succumbed to a heart attack.

As the trailer suggests, Jalabuddin alias Jolly (Riteish Deshmukh), Jalbhushan alias Jolly (Abhishek A Bachchan) and Julius alias Jolly (Akshay Kumar) turn up, each claiming to be the real inheritor. An Amar, Akbar, Anthony trio, in case you’ve missed the point.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala who credits himself with the story and screenplay with help from Farhad Samji for screenplay and dialogue, attempts Priyadarshan style mayhem. The doctor aboard (Akashdeep Sabir) who can test their DNAs and find the real Jolly is killed. A couple of crew members who are suspect are also bumped off.

Three bumbling cops with Dagdu (Nana Patekar in a dhoti), Bhidu and Baba (Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff exchanging their names) lead the investigation. But the three Jollys do a bit of sleuthing too with their respective female partners playing crime busters along with them.

Songs and dances (none memorable except for a ‘Lal pari’ that lingers more because of its repetitive beat) with all the line-up of female stars (from Chitrangada Singh to Jacqueline and Soundarya) contributing nothing but glamour, prolong the film without adding any worthy excitement to it.

After scenes like the whole lead cast flying all over the place with a big fan spinning on, it feels like a pizza that’s fallen flat. The murders may have been wrapped up by the trio led by Dagdu but it’s delivered with neither nailbiting thrill nor aisle-rolling humour. A few bawdy dialogues on strawberries and backsides come and go but are switched off even before they fully land.

Director Tarun Mansukhani winds up the mirthless fifth edition of a franchise that stands for humour and entertainment with the same surprise ingredient he used in his Dostana – an unexpected last-minute star entry.

Considering the lineup of talent known for its comic timing especially Akshay Kumar, Fardeen, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek A Bachchan, nobody stands out for a rollicking performance. Even the presence of Johnny Lever fails to lend comic fun. Aakhri Pasta (Chunky Panday) is overused, lessening the impact he usually has when he makes one fleeting appearance and his ‘I’m a joking’ brings a smile of familiarity to the viewer.

Housefull 5 Watch Or Not?: I’m not a joking, the 5th marks the hollowing out of a once successful franchise.
