Right after the early-screening of the film, twitter was filled with first-reactions of the moviegoers that broadly hinted towards the movie’s upcoming success. With Pedro Pascal, Denzel washington and paul mescal in the film, gladiator 2 is directed by ridley scott who also made the first part nearly two decades ago in 2000.
In the film, Mescal portrays Lucius Verus II, the grown-up nephew of Emperor Commodus, originally played by Joaquin Phoenix. After being enslaved, Lucius comes back to Rome, not as a ruler but as a gladiator, driven by revenge and a desire for power. His goal is to restore Rome’s former glory for its citizens. The first trailer, released in July, quickly gained 215 million views worldwide across various platforms within just a few days.
Most of the first reactions from attendees at the first Los Angeles screening can be seen positive. Jillian Chilingerian from OffScreenCentral said, “Engrave Denzel Washington’s name on the best supporting actor Oscar for ‘Gladiator 2‘ right this instance.”
KTLA contributor, Scott Mantz also called the movie “an epic sequel,” further stating it has “great action, amazing visual effects, stellar performances across the board.”
Other tweets also said, that Gladiator II served as the richest feast in the epic action set. While Ridley Scott’s critical reception has been inconsistent in the last few years with projects like “Robin Hood” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings”, expectations are high as “Gladiator II” might be one of his best efforts since “Black Hawk Down.”
