What is Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case

The Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case sent shockwaves across the nation, shedding light on the abhorrent realities of abuse and exploitation within shelter homes. Run under the guise of a non-governmental organization named ‘Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti,’ the shelter home in Muzaffarpur became a site of unimaginable horror, where cases of se*ual abuse, rape, and torture came to the fore.

Medical examinations conducted on the inmates revealed distressing findings, with reports confirming the se*ual abuse of 34 out of 42 girls residing in the shelter. The revelation sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, prompting swift action from authorities.

Brajesh Thakur, the founder of the NGO responsible for operating the shelter home, was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court in 2020. The severity of the crimes prompted the Bihar Government to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The atrocities inflicted upon the inmates of the Muzaffarpur shelter home first came to light on May 26, 2018, following a damning report submitted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to the Bihar government, unraveling a dark chapter in the nation’s conscience.
