Former ‘Harry Potter’ Actor Rupert Grint Once Decided To Leave Acting And Start Selling Ice Cream

Rupert, Who Brought To Life The Character Of Harry's Loyal Friend Ron Weasley, Made A Decision To Step Away From Acting

The popular actor Rupert Grint, renowned for his portrayal in the Harry Potter series, once contemplated departing from his acting career to become an ice cream vendor. Rupert, who brought to life the character of Harry’s loyal friend Ron Weasley, made a decision to step away from acting once the Harry Potter franchise concluded. He even purchased an ice cream van.

In an interview with The New York Times, Grint explained how his decade-long portrayal of Ron left him apprehensive about portraying other roles and uncertain about his prospects as an adult actor post the culmination of the Harry Potter films. This uncertainty prompted Grint to invest in an ice cream van, briefly entertaining the idea of transitioning into that business before eventually returning to acting a year later.

Quoting from the article, “When the Harry Potter films ended, Mr. Grint was worried that he may not make it as an adult actor. He knew how to play Ron, Harry’s brave, anxious sidekick. He didn’t know if he could play anyone else. ‘I definitely did think, ‘Is it too late to pick something else?’’ he said. He bought a pink-and-white ice cream van, which he drove back to his family home just north of London on his last day of shooting.”

Following a year-long hiatus, Grint decided to give acting another shot. Although he received offers for roles similar to “Potter” adjacent characters, he held out for more mature, edgier, and serious roles. He embraced theater, participating in a Jez Butterworth play, and also starred in the crime dramedy “Snatch.”

In retrospect, Grint’s decision to remain in acting has proven fortuitous.
