Cillian Murphy On Oppenheimer’s Oscar Nomination, Says ‘I’m Kind Of A Little In Shock’

The eagerly anticipated Oscar nominations for 2024 were unveiled on Tuesday, bringing forth recognition for outstanding achievements in cinema. Among the standout films, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” emerged as a frontrunner, earning a staggering 13 nominations, the highest for any film this year. Notably, Cillian Murphy, who portrays the title character, received a nod in the prestigious Best Actor category.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Murphy shared his thoughts on the unexpected honor, expressing profound humility. “It’s very, very humbling. I’m kind of a little in shock. It’s just a real honour to be involved in a film that has connected so powerfully with people in a way that we never expected,” said the actor.

“Oppenheimer,” which premiered alongside the Margot Robbie-starrer “Barbie” on July 21, 2023, received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. The film’s success extended to the box office, grossing over $900 million globally.

Recalling the moment he learned about his Oscar nomination, Murphy painted a vivid picture of the excitement that unfolded. “I was at home in Cork with my mom and dad and my wife. And my phone started popping, so I figured it was good news. Everybody started texting. You know, you can’t really avoid good news or bad news, but it’s better when it’s good news,” he shared.

Talking about the movie, it is based on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist often hailed as the father of the atomic bomb. Nolan’s biopic provides a deep dive into the complex life and contributions of this historical figure.
