In the latest episode of Barbie Vs Oppenheimer, it’s Greta Gerwig’s Barbie who is winning the race. The results of the box office collection of the opening weekend are out, and Oppenheimer is lagging in the race with quite a shocking difference in the numbers. Barbie earned a whopping USD 155 million (approx Rs 1270 crore) in the USA over the weekend. The film has got the largest opening weekend of 2023, defeating Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible, Nolan’s Oppenheimer and other previously released films like The Flash, Ant-Man and the Wasp etc. Barbie also becomes the highest-grossing movie for a female director.
Talking about Oppenheimer box office collection, the Nolan film earned USD 80.5 million (approx Rs 660 crore) on the opening weekend in USA. Thus, Barbie has left Oppenheimer far behind in the box office battle by grossing double the amount in three days.
While Barbie is dominating the US box office, the Indian box office is seeing the reverse trend. In India, Oppenheimer is ahead in the race as it earned Rs 13.5 crore on the opening day and minted Rs 17 crore on second day. On the other hand, Barbie opened with Rs 5 crore collection followed by earning Rs 6.5 crore on Day 2.
Barbie is a fantasy movie that takes inspiration from Barbie fashion dolls. We have seen animated Barbie movies in the past, but Greta Gerwig presented us with the first live-action Barbie movie. It features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles.
Oppenheimer, on the other hand, is a biographical thriller film based on the life and works of a physicist. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan. It features Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.
