The enduring charm of the nine-yard garment has been revered on red carpets worldwide, serving as a tribute to the opulent heritage and culture of the Indian subcontinent.

With that being said, here’s the list of the Indian and Global icons and celebs who wore “saree” at the Met Gala.

Alia Bhatt

Natasha Poonawalla

The executive director of the Serum Institute of India made history by bringing the Indian sari to the Met Gala. Donning a Sabyasachi x Schiaparelli gold ensemble styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, she exuded regal opulence in line with the 2022 Met Gala theme, “Gilded Glamour”. Natasha accessorized with bangles from Sabyasachi’s Curiosity Art and Antiquity Project and Bhavya Ramesh Jewellery earrings.

Isha Ambani

Following Natasha’s lead, the Director of Reliance Retail honored the late designer Karl Lagerfeld at the 2023 Met Gala in a black draped Prabal Gurung gown, inspired by the sari. The ensemble boasted a long, flowing train adorned with glittering pearls. Isha also accessorized with a mini Chanel bag from the 2012 Paris Bombay collection.

Naomi Campbell

In addition to Isha Ambani, supermodel Naomi Campbell chose a rare Chanel archival ensemble from the Spring/Summer 2010 couture collection for the 2023 Met Gala. Inspired by the sari, the salmon pink fabric was paired with a metallic blouse, complemented by silver arm cuffs and matching earrings. Campbell had previously showcased a sari during Sabyasachi’s fashion show in 2019.

Blake Lively

At the 2011 Met Gala, the 36-year-old American actress donned a custom floral Chanel ensemble inspired by the sari, featuring layered cowls and semi-sheer detailing. The outfit paid tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen, aligning with the theme “Savage Beauty”.
