When Chunky Panday Was Jailed For Stealing A Car

Chunky Panday once revealed that he had to spend a night behind the bars for stealing someone's car.

Did you know that Chunky Panday was once jailed for stealing someone’s car? Well, this is quite an interesting trivia about the actor that isn’t known to the public. Bollywood actor Chunky Panday is a happy-go-lucky man who doesn’t take life too seriously. His father, Sharad Pandey was a well-renowned heart surgeon in Mumbai. Chunky also once thought of becoming a doctor like his father but the dream was lost when he realized that he is not that good in academics. As a kid, he mostly indulged in notorious activities which even landed him in serious trouble.

In the mid-90s, Chunky had once revealed to Lehren that he was put behind bars for stealing a car. In an exclusive interview, he said, “As a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut because I wanted to be out of this world. Then I wanted to be a pilot. Then I wanted to be a doctor. But I was a duffer at studies that these things were out of the question. I used to be a very naughty kid. I changed five schools and three colleges. I have gone to jail two times in my childhood. Can’t say I was jailed per se, but I was locked behind bars for a night. Once I had stolen a car and another time I had stolen coconuts from someone’s garden. I have trobled mummy and daddy a lot.”

At the age of 25, Chunky got a break in Bollywood. He made his big Bollywood debut in 1987 with the action film Aag hi Aag. He featured alongside Shatrughan Sinha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Dharmendra and Neelam. Becoming an actor was not something Chunky had planned in advance or dreamt of as a child. He said during the interview, “When I got my first film and I was shooting for it, I had nothing to lose. I thought what’s the harm in trying? But when the film premiered, I went mad, I was tearing up my clothes. I felt like I had won the lottery. After that, I became very serious about my career.”

Aag Hi Aag became the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year 1987. This boosted Chunky’s confidence and he signed 15-20 films at one time. Chunky admits that it wasn’t a wise decision as he signed everything that came his way before analyzing it. Some of his films flopped, and some of the producers backed out of the films mid-way. A few years later, Chunky realised that he needed to choose his films wisely. He said that while choosing a film, he first looks at who the producer is, then the director and then what role is he playing. He admitted that the story of the film comes on number four of his list.
