The Story Of Bobby Deol’s Sunglass Obsession: “I Used To Search For Them In His Cupboard, But It Was All In Vain”

Bobby Deol talks about this year being lucky for Deol's, speaks about his old rockstar image and portrayal of own negative characters in films.

Bobby Deol was known for his unique acting style and killer dance moves when he made his debut in the movie industry. The actor had his main lead debut in the film ‘Barsaat,’ released in 1995, which also earned him the prestigious ‘Filmfare Award For Best Debut (male).’ Bobby has received immense praise for his performances in critically acclaimed movies such as ‘Gupt,’ ‘Humraaz,’ and ‘Tango Charlie.’ He has also successfully entertained audiences with his comedy films like ‘Ye Chor Machaye Shor,’ ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana,’ ‘Thank You,’ and many more. He made his OTT debut with series like ‘Class of 83’ and ‘Aashram’ and received appreciation for his work.

The year 2023 has been a thrilling one for the ‘Deol Family.’ Legendary actor ‘Dharmendra Ji’ made a much-awaited comeback in K-Jo’s ‘Rocky Aur Raani Kii Prem Kahaani.’ Sunny Deol’s action blockbuster ‘Gadar-2’ crossed the Rs. 500 Crores mark at the box office, followed by new beginnings in Karan and Rajveer Deol’s lives.

In a recent conversation with ‘The Free Press Journal’ at the ‘Jagran Film Festival,’ Bobby expressed his thoughts, “God has been kind to us, and it’s been a special year for us as many of my family members were seen on the big screen. My brother Sunny’s film Gadar 2 was a huge hit. Dad (Dharmendra) was marvelous in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani… No one could have done that role better than him. He created magic with his wonderful performance. My nephew Rajveer’s film Dono created a buzz, and his chacha’s, that is my film, Animal, is releasing soon. My nephew, Karan, got married. We are all boys so now we have a daughter in the family.”

Regarding his rockstar image during his earlier phase in movies, the actor added, “While growing up, I saw dad wearing these amazing sunglasses, and since then, I had an obsession with wearing them. I used to search for them in his cupboard, but it was all in vain. Later, I learned that he wore them while shooting and returned them after finishing it. I had then decided that when I grew up, I would have my own collection of sunglasses. I remember I was doing Barsaat, and I asked director Raj Kumar Santoshi if I could wear the purple-colored sunglasses I had, but he declined my request. However, Santosh Shivam (cinematographer) gave the green signal, and I wore them. I never knew that it would become a rage.”

Speaking about his portrayal of negative characters in films, Deol said that these roles are fun to play but they also take a toll. He used to be disgusted with himself after the shoot and consoled himself by saying that he was not that character but just playing it, so it’s fine. He chooses films that attract him to go on set and keep doing it, as one cannot predict a film’s success or failure.

Bobby Deol will be next seen in Kabir Singh fame director ‘Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s’ much-anticipated action-thriller ‘Animal,’ co-starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Rashmika Mandanna in leading roles. The film is all set to release on December 1st this year.
