R Balki’s Shocking Revelation: Nobody Wanted To Make ‘English Vinglish’ With A Female Lead

Filmmaker R Balki shares a surprising story behind the making of the acclaimed film 'English Vinglish,' starring the late actress Sridevi. Balki discloses the challenges he faced in finding producers willing to support a project with a female lead.

Renowned filmmaker R Balki recently opened up about the challenges faced during the production of ‘English Vinglish,’ a 2012 film directed by his wife Gauri Shinde. In an insightful interview with Radio Nasha Official, Balki shared that the film initially faced difficulties in finding producers due to its unique characteristics.

“English Vinglish” was distinct in that it was to be shot in the United States and was led by a female character. The combination of these factors raised doubts among potential producers about the film’s financial viability. Balki reminisced about those early hurdles, stating that many were skeptical, questioning the potential of a film with a female lead that required significant investment.

Balki’s response was straightforward. He rejected the notion of a “female lead” and emphasized the importance of treating the lead character as an actor, irrespective of gender. However, the struggle to secure backing continued until a fortuitous meeting with Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, which ultimately paved the way for the production of “English Vinglish.”

“When Gauri was writing ‘English Vinglish’ nobody was willing to kind of produce it at that point of time because it was going to be shot in the US, with one female lead. They said, ‘How can you have a film with a female lead and spend so much?’”, he said.

The filmmaker also shared a fascinating story of how the late actor Sridevi came on board as the lead in the movie. Balki discussed another project with Sridevi, finding it challenging to convey that the project might not materialize. Simultaneously, Gauri was in the process of writing “English Vinglish,” and casting decisions had not been made. The idea of Sridevi’s involvement had not yet been considered. However, Balki arranged a meeting between Gauri and Sridevi, and within a 10-minute conversation, a strong connection developed, leading to Sridevi’s decision to take on the lead role in “English Vinglish.”

The film went on to achieve critical acclaim and success, and Balki’s revelations shed light on the remarkable journey of overcoming obstacles and transforming a unique concept into a cinematic triumph.
