The box office performance of Bollywood in the first quarter of 2025 presents a rather disheartening scenario. So far, only one film, Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, has achieved remarkable success during these initial three months. Meanwhile, two other films, Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force and John Abraham’s The Diplomat, have only managed to attract a modest audience. In contrast, the same period last year saw several successful releases, including Shaitaan, Article 370, and Crew.
In the first quarter of 2025, the Bollywood box office faced a considerable downturn, with “Chhaava” standing out as a notable exception. This historical action drama, directed by Laxman Utekar, is adapted from the Marathi novel “Chhava” by Shivaji Sawant. The film features Vicky Kaushal in the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, and Akshaye Khanna in a crucial role.
“Chhaava” premiered on February 14, 2025, and experienced significant success at the box office. It emerged as Vicky Kaushal’s highest-grossing film on its opening day and claimed the title of the largest Hindi film opener of 2025, breaking prior records. The film’s earnings during its opening weekend were outstanding, ranking it among the top opening weekends in Bollywood history. By the conclusion of its first week, “Chhaava” had generated over ₹293 crore in India, establishing it as the first official hit of 2025.
Despite the success of “Chhaava,” the overall first quarter of 2025 experienced a limited number of film releases, resulting in a subdued box office atmosphere. Industry analysts have highlighted the necessity for a broader range of releases to revitalize the theatre business and promote growth within the sector. Looking forward, Salman Khan’s “Sikandar,” which released on March 30, 2025, and expected to enhance box office earnings and wrap up the quarter on a positive note.
Although the early months of 2025 posed difficulties for Bollywood, “Chhaava” emerged as a significant success, providing optimism for a more dynamic box office in the months to come.
