Kim Nam-joon, better known as RM, the leader of the world-famous K-pop group BTS created history with his new documentary Right People, Wrong Place. The film had its world premiere at the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) on October 7. Shown under the ‘Open Cinema’ section, making it the first-ever K-pop documentary to be invited at this prestigious event under this category. Although due to BTS RM’s mandatory military service commitments, he wasn’t able to attend.
BTS RM’s documentary Right People, Wrong Place holds great significance, not only for fans but for the entire K-pop industry. This is the first K-pop documentary to premiere at the Busan International Film Festival under the ‘Open Cinema’ section, marking a milestone in BTS’s influence that goes beyond music. Though RM couldn’t attend due to military duties, the film’s creative team, including director Lee Seok-jun and contributors to his album, like San Yawn and Jang Se Hun, made their presence felt. Despite the heavy rain warnings, ARMYs (BTS fans) showed up in large numbers, proving their love and support for RM, even in his absence.
As per the reports of All Kpop, the director Lee described the film as “a deep record of RM’s inner self and a reflection of emotions that everyone has felt at some point in life.” The production team also expressed gratitude, saying, “We’re thankful to share RM’s journey in such a special setting and want to congratulate RM and the audience on this occasion.”
Right People, Wrong Place follows the personal and creative journey of BTS RM during the eight months before his military enlistment. The documentary showcases his process of working on his second solo album Right Place, Wrong Person. It reveals RM’s internal struggles as he reflects on feeling like the “right person in the wrong place” or the “wrong person in the right place” in different settings.
The film dives deep into RM’s identity, balancing his role as BTS’s leader and his life as an individual, giving fans a rare and personal glimpse into his world.
