Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are celebrating more than just their personal connection this weekend, as the dynamic duo took the lead at the box office with their individual movies. Ryan Reynolds’ Marvel hit Deadpool & Wolverine and Blake Lively’s version of Colleen Hoover’s book It Ends With Us both made a big impact, with Deadpool earning $54 million in the US and It Ends With Us not far behind at $50 million.
Since its release on July 26, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine has soared to great heights, earning $494.3 million domestically, ranking among the top films of the post-pandemic period. At the same time, It Ends With Us has surpassed all forecasts, with its $50 million opening weekend representing a major achievement for Blake Lively, who also played a role in the movie and was a producer.
This remarkable achievement places Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds as the first couple to be married for 34 years to occupy the top two positions at the box office, a milestone previously achieved by Bruce Willis and Demi Moore in 1990. At that time, Bruce Willis’ Die Hard 2 and Demi Moore’s Ghost took the lead and second places, with Ghost ultimately surpassing all others as the year’s highest-earning film and receiving numerous nominations at the Oscars.
The advertising journey for “It Ends With Us” has encountered its fair share of obstacles. There have been whispers of discomfort on set, as viewers observed uneasy exchanges between the actors and director Justin Baldoni, who is recognized for his performance in “Jane the Virgin.” Particularly, there were no group photos of the entire cast at the movie’s opening, and Justin Baldoni has been managing interviews by himself. Blake Lively also disclosed that Ryan Reynolds had written one of the movie’s key scenes, a piece of information that caught screenwriter Christy Hall off guard. The movie’s promotional efforts have also come under scrutiny, with some viewers worried that the cheerful promotional content could give the wrong impression, suggesting the film is a lighthearted romantic comedy when in reality, it tackles the heavy issue of domestic violence.
