Bengali Director Rahool Mukherjee Banned From Making Films For 3 Months

Bengali director Rahool Mukherjee is banned from filmmaking for three months for violating rules by shooting in Bangladesh without permission.

The Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) has suspended young director Rahool Mukherjee from filmmaking for three months due to a breach of its regulations regarding foreign shooting locations.

As a result, production house SVF has replaced Mukherjee with a different director. FCTWEI President Swarup Biswas stated that Mukherjee did not inform either the federation or the Directors’ Association of Eastern India about his trip to Bangladesh for a film shoot, which is a violation of the rules.

Scenes from the untitled film with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Anirban Bhattacharya, and Priyanka Sarkar were shot in a neighboring country. When Rahool Mukherjee’s long absence became a concern and he was contacted, he initially claimed he was visiting Bangladesh as a tourist, according to Swarup Biswas. Biswas added that Mukherjee had used technicians from the Dhaka film industry for the shoot.

Rahool Mukherjee, who was originally set to direct the film starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Anirban Bhattacharya, has stepped down from the role and will be replaced by Soumik Haldar. However, Rahool will continue with the project as a creative producer, as confirmed by the production company. The filming was initially planned to begin in mid-July.

After receiving the ban, Rahool Mukherjee chose not to comment directly but shared a social media post from veteran filmmaker Anjan Dutt, who criticized the ban as wrong, unethical, and illegal. Mukherjee also posted support from acclaimed director Srijit, who argued that banning someone and limiting their ability to work is not a productive approach.
