Alpha Movie Critic Review:

Let’s get two things out of the way right away. YRF has abandoned its RAW+ISI bhai-bhai theme for a change and Sharvari (as Durga) is not a Pak agent teaming with Indian Sita (Alia Bhatt). In fact, Pakistan is the baddie that’s named this time and India is the one with the valour. Jai Hind to that.

With the pre-release misinformation set aside, step into the dark world of demoted army officer Fateh Singh Lakhawat (Bobby Deol) whose pet project Alpha has been officially shut down.

In his punishment posting at Cherrapunji, he continues his research to create the ultimate Alpha soldier with infant Sita as his guinea pig.

While Sita grows into a fully trained warrior, Col Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor) who was once a part of Team Alpha with tragic consequences, has become Chief of RA&W.

Director Shiv Rawail works with the handicap of blurry writing (credit Aditya Chopra, Uday Chopra, Ishita Moitra, Shridhar Raghavan and Soumil Shukla for it), replete with confusing flashbacks. But Shiv compounds it with a listless film that just does not have the energy required of a spy thriller.

With sparkling writing and inspired direction, the basic story that puts Anil Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and Bobby Deol in situations that hold the promise of fierce clashes and emotional tugs, could have turned into an interesting high-energy film.

Instead, action and emotion come off limp and lame. Equally weakly, there’s an attempt at doing an upside down of Dhurandhar. Pakistanis have infiltrated the Indian army. But the lack of excitement continues.

After War 2, this is Hrithik Roshan’s second outing as Agent Kabir that doesn’t deliver a solid punch.

From frame one, Anil Kapoor wears a troubled worry on his face. Animation in any situation is alien in this RA&W chief’s life.

Bobby Deol too, attempts a forced Punjabi accent once in a while as Fateh Singh, and mumbles another energy-minus monologue under his beard at the end.

The biggest letdown is Alia Bhatt who is so disturbingly miscast that even Jigra seemed more suitable for her.

The only energy pill is Sharvari who looks and delivers like a pro who can throw a punch.

It is pointless to mention production values or locations when the main storytelling is so sluggish.

Alpha – Watch it or not?: At best, an OTT watch.

Alpha Movie Review Score Rating: 1.5 out of 5 (i.e. 1.5/5)
