Accused Movie Review:
The intent is to normalise gay relationships, a gay marriage in this case, where the focus is on the story and not on raising eyebrows over sexual preferences.
To that extent director Anubhuti Kashyap, and writers Sima Agarwal and Yash Keswani pull it off. Once Dr Geetika Sen (Konkona Sen Sharma) and “wife” Dr Meera (Pratibha Ranta) are accepted by the viewer just as casually as the people in their workplace do, it’s the investigation into a sexual misconduct case that should be the focus.
But it isn’t.
Maybe because the makers are taking baby steps into gay territory, there is a tentativeness still in the air. Is Geetika guilty of making her female patients uncomfortable with overtures? Or of sexual misconduct with junior colleagues? If guilt free, then who’s trying to frame her?
While that should have held the mystery and excitement of a thriller, the investigation is as cold as kulfi, the outcome more a predictable feminist rant than a satisfying end to a curious case.
Trace the general absence of excitement to the desperate need to bring in couple issues.
Geetika – the husband, the best gynaec in the hospital, her timings unpredictable. Role playing the one who wears the pants in the house.
Meera – the waiting wife, accommodating, ready to put career aside for a baby and home.
Geetika – the strongman at work, brooks no inefficiency, curt with reprimands. Ready to pick a fight with podcasters or colleagues who take her parking slot. At home, she can scream but Meera is told, “Don’t ever raise your voice with me.”
Meera – the insecure, suspicious wife, wanting to help partner out of her crisis, yet full of doubts about fidelity.
The end of the investigation that comes with routine charges of, “You don’t like a woman getting promoted over you” and Geetika-Meera resolving their issues with the accused mellowing with understanding, are ‘straight’ out of an old-world couple’s story. What’s new and different is only that the same issues are now between two women and not between a man and a woman.
Unfortunately, that is not enough to keep you rivetted either about their domestic issues or the charge of sexual misdemeanour and unfair privilege over juniors.
Added to it are the characters with a cardboard feel. Simran (Monica Mahendru) who runs the hospital, completely leaning towards Geetika’s side. Bhargav (Mashhoor Amrohi), an investigator from outside whose stock-in-trade are specs, a notebook and a pen held on the left. An ex from Geetika’s past to bring in Meera’s wifely insecurity.
Why Geetika has to lie to Meera about her job or her ex isn’t clear.
What is clear is that Konkona Sen is not at her best. In fact, in emotional showdowns, in the parking lot and with Meera, it’s almost as if she’s rehearsing a stage play. That is the general feeling all through with all the characters. They don’t feel like strong flesh and blood characters who draw you into the mess they’re trying to sort out.
As a foray into gay life, it is a step forward from say, Vidya Balan’s Neeyat (2023), where revealing her lesbian relationship was the climactic twist. Anubhuti wastes no time in presenting Geetika and Meera as they are – a married couple.
But as a thriller or a couple with issues, it’s only the genderplay that’s different.
Accused – Watch it or not?: Fortunately, it’s on OTT with Pause and FF options. But if a look at a normal gay couple interests you, this could be a good beginning.
