Aamir Khan has finally reacted to the controversy surrounding his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt. After tying the knot in an intimate ceremony on July 5 under the Special Marriage Act, the actor-filmmaker faced criticism on social media with some accusing him of promoting “love jihad”. The controversy grew further after a fatwa was reportedly issued against him by Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, who stated that under Sharia law, a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she converts to Islam.
Speaking to Rediff, Mr Perfectionist addressed both the allegations and the criticism making it clear that none of his wives ever converted their religion.
“None Of My Wives Converted Their Religion”
Responding to being called the “brand ambassador of love jihad”, Aamir said, “The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian.”
He further clarified, “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes.”
The actor stressed that all three of his marriages were civil marriages and that religion was never changed by any of his partners.
A Look At Aamir Khan’s Personal Life
Aamir was first married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. After their divorce, he married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. Although they separated in 2021, the two continue to co-parent their son Azad.
Earlier this year, Aamir married Bengaluru-based Gauri Spratt, whom he introduced publicly around his 60th birthday after revealing that they had known each other for nearly 25 years before reconnecting.
By addressing the controversy directly, Aamir Khan chose to respond with facts rather than speculation. His statement makes it clear that his marriages were conducted under civil law and that none of his wives converted their religion, while also highlighting the diverse and inclusive nature of his family.
