A popular American character actor James Tolkan, best known for his strict and memorable roles in films like Back to the Future and Top Gun, has passed away at the age of 94. He died on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York as confirmed by a family spokesperson.
For many fans, he wasn’t just another actor. He was the man who made calling someone a “slacker” feel iconic.
James Tolkan became widely popular for playing Principal Mr. Strickland in Back to the Future. His sharp voice and strict attitude made the character unforgettable to his fans. He later returned in the sequels, even playing the grandfather version of the same character.
And in Top Gun, he pportrayed the role of Commander “Stinger” Jardian where he gave Tom Cruise’s Maverick a tough time for his reckless behavior. His strong screen presence made him perfect for such roles.
His career lasted more than five decades. From early roles in shows like Naked City to films like The Amityville Horror and WarGames, Tolkan built a steady and respected career.
His career didn’t just limited to screens but also lit up stages, who worked in theatre including the original Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross. Over the years, he appeared in many TV shows like Miami Vice, The Wonder Years and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Born in Michigan in 1931, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before moving to New York to study acting. He trained under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg which shaped his strong acting style.
He is survived by his wife Parmelee. The two met during an off-Broadway play in 1971 and stayed together ever since.
