Released around Republic Day, undoubtedly Border 2 arrived with massive expectations and heavy nostalgia attached to it. The 1997 classic by JP Dutta still holds an emotional place in Indian cinema and its sequel tapped straight into that sentiment. Within just four days, the film reportedly crossed the ₹250 crore mark worldwide, leaving both trade watchers and audiences surprised.
Directed by Anurag Singh and produced by JP Dutta along with his daughter Nidhi Dutta, the film brings together a large ensemble cast including Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Sonam Bajwa and others. With a long runtime of nearly 3 hours and 20 minutes, the film presents an action-packed war drama showcasing the Army, Navy and Air Force together on screen.
Big Numbers, Bigger Debate
According to a box office report by Hindustan Times, the film collected around ₹251 crore globally in just four days, starting strong with nearly ₹30 crore on its opening day. While the makers celebrated the milestone, social media especially Reddit told a different story.
An anonymous Reddit post questioned the authenticity of the numbers, asking, “Are these numbers legit? Interesting how this film isn’t facing the same self-booking, fake collection allegation cycle that Dhurandhar, Jawan and others did.” The post quickly gained traction and sparked mixed reactions.
Fans React on Social Media
Taking to the comment section, some viewers strongly defended the film. One user wrote, “26 Jan holiday, patriotism at peak, nostalgia factor, no competition, both multiplex and single screens are watching the film. Sunny Deol with army-based movies is a beast in the north belt.”
Others were not impressed. A harsh comment read, “It’s the worst army movie ever made. No storyline, poor VFX, only patriotic dialogues. Basically Sunny Deol shouting for 3h 19m.”
Another user questioned the trend, saying, “If nostalgia works so well, why didn’t Jolly LLB 3, Son of Sardaar, Kesari or Raid 2 open this big?”
There were also balanced takes. One viewer shared, “I checked tickets since Thursday and most shows were housefull. It didn’t bore me. Not a great movie, but okay for a family watch on a national holiday.”
Industry watchers believe the combination of a national holiday with long weekend, lack of competition and emotional pull played a big role. Whether the momentum will hold in the coming weeks remains to be seen but Border 2 has clearly succeeded in getting people talking both inside theatres and online.
