The ultimate Bollywood queen Deepika Padukone, who continue to make Indian cinema proud on the global stage – expanding her reach through international brand collaborations and large-scale global ventures, meanwhile she recently shared her thoughts on Indian cinema not getting enough recognition at the Academy Awards. IN a video posted on her Instagram official handle while preparing for the Louis Vuitton show in Paris, she reflected on how several deserving Indian films and talents have been ignored at the Oscars. Deepika Padukone also recalled an emotional moment from the 2023 ceremony when the visionary SS Rajamouli’s epic film RRR’s song ‘Naatu Naatu’ won Best Original Song.
“India has been robbed of the Oscars many times. Many, many deserving movies I feel like have got snubbed. Whether it’s movies, whether it’s talent… But I remember being in the audience and when they announced RRR, I got emotional. Outside of being an Indian I had really nothing to do with that movie but that was a huge, huge moment. That felt very, very personal,” she said.
While talking about this year’s Academy Awards, Deepika Padukone shared that one win made her particularly happy – Adrien Brody’s Best Actor victory for The Brutalist at the Oscars 2025. She captioned her video, “@adrienbrody take a bow!” The video also included clips from highly praised Indian films like All We Imagine As Light, Laapataa Ladies, Tumbbad, and The Lunchbox. Despite receiving international appreciation, these films did not make it to the Oscars.
The 97th Academy Awards saw Anora as the big winner, taking home five awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker. Deepika Padukone’s comments have added to the ongoing debate about Indian cinema not getting its due on global platforms. Many Indian films have made an impact worldwide but only a few have received Oscar recognition.
Deepika Padukone who introduced Naatu Naatu on the stage back in OScars 2023 , continues to be a global icon. She recently seen at the Forbes 30/50 Global Summit and for now, she is also part of Kalki2898AD part 2 – and has not sign any other flick as she’s currently indulged into motherhood.
