A popular face of the 90s, Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni was known not just for her acting but also for her controversial statements and antics. With memorable roles in films like Karan Arjun, Kabhi Tum Kabhi Hum and Andolan, Mamta’s fame was sometimes marred by her tendency to court controversies. One of the most talked-about incidents from her career involves a heated exchange with actress Ameesha Patel.
The incident reportedly took place at a private, invite-only party hosted by a mutual friend in Mauritius. According to a report in Masala magazine, the argument between Mamta Kulkarni and a waiter began over a minor issue: the quality of the meat being served. Mamta, a guest at the event, found the meat unsatisfactory and expressed her displeasure. The waiter, in his defence, said that the dish in question was venison, not chicken. However, according to sources, Mamta did not agree and created a ruckus over the matter.
Ameesha Patel, who was also at the party, witnessed the altercation and reportedly commented on Mamta’s behaviour, especially her need for social behaviour in dealing with the situation. The comment, though a little soft, did not go down well with Mamta Kulkarni and she appeared to take it as an insult. Matters quickly escalated when Mamta’s friend got hold of Ameesha’s comment and passed it on to the actress, leading to an exchange of abuses between the two.
The encounter took a more personal turn when Mamta, feeling insulted, made a comment to demean Ameesha. Agreeing with the sources, Mamta quipped, “You are here in Mauritius for the shooting of hair oil, right? Well, for your data, where you get paid a mere Rs 1 lakh, I get paid Rs 15 lakh for this. So, you tell me, who is the bigger star, you or me?
This clarification was not only a blow to Ameesha’s career, but also an attempt to declare her status in the industry. Despite the indiscreet comment, Ameesha, who is known for her calm nature, decided not to get involved in the conversation and walked away from the scene, avoiding a major controversy.
The pressure did not completely let up despite Ameesha’s attempt to lighten the situation. In a meeting, the Gadar artist shed light on the incident, narrating how Mamta’s behaviour at the dinner caused major inconvenience. “We were all at a dinner party hosted by Mr Bajaj (of Bajaj Sevashram fame), and Mamta was complaining and bothering everyone about the food,” Ameesha reviewed. “Forget Mamta, actually her secretary started misbehaving with people there.”
Amisha, concerned about the inconvenience caused by Mamta and her companions, tried to calm the situation down. She added, “I didn’t want them to shout so much because Mr Bajaj was sitting at the table and I’m sure he could hear everything that was being said.” “I told her, ‘Everyone is eating the same food. Despite being in Mauritius, the hosts are trying their best to provide great food by Indian chefs, so I don’t think you should complain.'”
However, her attempt to calm the situation only made Mamta more agitated. The actress, who appears to have a deep sense of her own star status, angrily responded by asking, “Who do you think you are?”
This is where the controversy escalated. According to reports, Ameesha Patel, feeling herself pushed beyond her limits, made a scathing remark: “If you were a little educated, it would have helped you.” This remark infuriated Mamta’s secretary, who reportedly came close to physically threatening Ameesha. It seemed like the situation might get even more serious, but just as things were about to get worse, Ameesha’s mother intervened.
As Mamta’s secretary reportedly raised her hand in aggression, Ameesha’s mother intervened. She reportedly grabbed the secretary’s arm and shouted, “Don’t you dare touch my daughter!” This intervention prevented a violent escalation and eventually the situation was defused.
