Why Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha Stopped Working Together?

Shatrughan Sinha disclosed that Amitabh Bachchan's ascent to fame was aided by roles that were originally presented to Sinha but subsequently rejected by him.

Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha, who were once close friends and often collaborated as co-stars during the 1970s and early 1980s, faced a considerable estrangement stemming from a mix of professional competition and personal disagreements.

In his autobiography Anything But Khamosh, Shatrughan Sinha disclosed that Amitabh Bachchan’s ascent to fame was aided by roles that were originally presented to Sinha but subsequently rejected by him. Sinha indicated that he declined numerous significant roles that ultimately contributed to Bachchan’s career-defining success. He also implied that Bachchan’s rise was propelled by opportunities that were initially intended for him.

Additionally, Sinha recounted moments during the production of Kaala Patthar (1979) where Bachchan’s demeanor suggested an increasing estrangement. He observed that his chair was never positioned next to Bachchan, and during transit between filming locations, Bachchan did not extend an invitation for him to share his vehicle. Sinha found this conduct peculiar, as he harbored no personal animosity towards Bachchan.

The contrasting work ethics of the actors also played a role in the tension. Amitabh Bachchan was recognized for his punctuality, whereas Shatrughan Sinha was known for his tardiness to filming. This disparity reportedly led to friction on set, especially during the production of Dostana (1980), where director Raj Khosla encountered difficulties due to these differences.

Nevertheless, Shatrughan Sinha has conveyed his admiration for Amitabh Bachchan, labeling him the ‘Mahanayak’ (great actor) of Indian cinema. He acknowledged their past differences but highlighted that they have since reconciled, fostering a friendly relationship in subsequent years.

In conclusion, the discord between Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha stemmed mainly from professional rivalries, contrasting work ethics, and personal insecurities, resulting in a halt to their collaborations in the early 1980s.
