Why Aishwarya Rai Refused To Work In Abhishek Bachchan Starrer ‘Happy New Year’?

The movie directed by Farah Khan and featuring Abhishek Bachchan,Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone was set to be a major triumph. With a star-studded cast and a storyline focused on a robbery, the film was packed with everything needed to achieve box office success.

In the dazzling realm of Bollywood, where the allure of fame and the promise of high profits frequently influence the decisions of actors, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s choice to decline a part in the 2014 mega-hit Happy New Year was unexpected by many. Directed by Farah Khan and featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Abhishek Bachchan, the movie was set to be a massive success. It boasted a star-studded cast and a storyline revolving around a heist, all of which suggested it would be a blockbuster. However, Aishwarya, who is among Bollywood’s most renowned actresses, decided not to be a part of it, despite the opportunity to add another gem to her impressive resume.

During a vintage interview, Aishwarya shared the thought process that led to her choice. She confessed that the proposal looked appealing, and the project looked like an enjoyable adventure. “Yes, I received the movie offer, and it did look like a great time. I was sure we’d have a great time doing it, and it was going to be fun,” Aishwarya mentioned in an interview. Nonetheless, the cast’s dynamics, particularly the presence of her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, were crucial factors in her decision to decline.

Aishwarya clarified that she and Abhishek, who tied the knot during the filming, wouldn’t be playing romantic rivals. Rather, Abhishek’s part in the film didn’t include any romantic connections with her character. She shared her discomfort about the potential awkwardness this could have caused during filming. “It wouldn’t have been a good fit for us in the movie, and not being on screen together would have been quite strange. That’s why I had to turn it down,” she elaborated.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s choice to not participate in the Happy New Year celebrations is just one example of her turning down projects that eventually became blockbuster hits. Throughout her career, she has also turned down numerous other significant roles, such as Munnabhai MBBS, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Krrish, all of which achieved great success at the box office. These choices highlight her belief in her own journey and her grasp of her image as an actress. For Aishwarya, the decision-making process has always been about more than just the film’s potential success; it’s about whether the character fits with her personal and professional ethics.

Looking back at Aishwarya’s choices, it’s crucial to understand the complexities of Bollywood’s casting practices, especially for women. In an industry dominated by men, where scripts often favor male leads, the roles available to women can sometimes seem restrictive.

Regarding the movie, Happy New Year emerged as a major success in 2014, with Deepika Padukone taking on the lead role that was initially given to Aishwarya. This achievement solidified the Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone duo as a favorite among fans, and it highlighted Farah Khan’s talent for directing big-budget, action-packed films. Yet, for Aishwarya, choosing not to be part of this film was simply another example of her choosing her own journey over conforming to popular opinion.
