At the ongoing Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), several Indian celebrities and films are being honoured with major accolades. Global star Ram Charan was recognized with the Ambassador for Indian Art & Culture Award, Karan Johar received the People’s Choice Award for ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ and music maestro A.R. Rahman was awarded the Excellence in Cinema honour. Among the highlights were the screenings of Vikrant Massey’s ‘Sector 36’ and Sanya Malhotra’s ‘Mrs’, both of which received standing ovations, leaving the actors deeply emotional.
Sanya Malhotra was overwhelmed with joy as she received a standing ovation for her role in ‘Mrs’, directed by Arati Kadav. The actress was moved to tears by the audience’s reaction and the video of her emotional response has gone viral on social media. After the screening, Sanya shared her experiences preparing for the role, mentioning that she had got therapy notes of a close friend who had faced similar struggles as showcased in the film. She expressed her desire to make films that have a meaningful impact and inspire—particularly for women.
Meanwhile, Vikrant Massey’s ‘Sector 36′, a Netflix original directed by Aditya Nimbalkar, also received a fantastic round of applause. The film, a chilling crime-thriller inspired by true events, was well-received by the audience at the festival. Massey discussed the mental and emotional challenges of his role, stating that while there were no significant physical changes, the role pushed him to his limits. He further shared that he will continually challenge himself as an actor.
Following the premiere, Vikrant Massey was seen comforting fans who shared their personal stories, highlighting the ongoing struggle with mental health, which remains still a taboo topic in India.
Sanya Malhotra’s ‘Mrs’ does not have a confirmed release date yet, but the audience is eager to see her performance, especially after her win for Best Actress at the New York Indian Film Festival. The film is an official adaptation of the Malayalam movie ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’.
Vikrant Massey’s ‘Sector 36’ is set to premiere on Netflix on September 13. Ahead of this premiere show, the makers had unveiled a spine-chilling poster with the caption, “Unexplained disappearances, a deadly chase, and the dark truth”.
