B. Saroja Devi – First Female Superstar Of Kannada
Born in Karnataka, B. Saroja Devi began acting at just the age of 17 and quickly rose to fame, and when on to built a stardom which earned her epithets like ‘Abhinaya Saraswathi’ in Kannada and ‘Kannadathu Paingili’ in Tamil. She wasn’t just a star in South India but seamlessly worked across regional industries of Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and also in Hindi film industry – being a pan-Indian star long before when the term was even a thing in the cinema.
B Saroja Devi made her Hindi acting debut opposite ultimate Bollywood icon Dilip Kumar in Paigham (1959) and went on to star alongside other big names of Hindi cinema like Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor. But there was one major project she couldn’t complete – Nazrana (1961) starring legendary Raj Kapoor.
When ‘Nazrana’ Slipped Away
Nazrana was directed by C. V. Sridhar, it was the Hindi adaptation of his own Tamil hit Kalyana Parisu. B. Saroja Devi was initially cast in the remake and even began shooting. However, due to differences with director Sridhar she was eventually replaced by Usha Kiran, according to Wikipedia. The film also starred Vyjayanthimala as the other lead in a love triangle involving Raj Kapoor and went one to become one of the top grossing films of 1961.
Interestingly, B. Saroja Devi had earlier worked with Sridhar in the Tamil version of the same story. Despite the fallout and replacement, her impact on Hindi cinema remained memorable.
Even though her Hindi film appearances were limited, Saroja Devi left a mark in Bollywood. What made her career extraordinary was her dominance in the South Indian industry. She holds the rare record of being the lead actress in 161 consecutive films across three decades from 1955 to 1984.
She was also recognised with top civilian honours the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. These awards acknowledged not just her acting talent but also her contribution to Indian culture.
If B. Saroja Devi had continued with Nazrana, she would’ve added another legendary co-star Raj Kapoor to her impressive list. But even without that her journey is a tale of resilience, talent and unmatched success. She redefined stardom in an era when the film industry was overwhelmingly male-dominated.
Her passing marks the end of a glorious era but her legacy will live on in every frame which she graced. Rest in peace Saroja Devi, you will always be remembered.
