Vinod Rathod: The Rare Singer Who Adapted His Voice For Govinda, Shah Rukh Khan & More In Bollywood

Vinod Rathod opens up about playback singing, why today’s songs fade fast, and why he never made albums. Don’t miss his rare insights—watch the full interview now!

Vinod Rathod, a name that once dominated Bollywood playback singing is known for lending his voice to big stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt and more. Unlike many singers who maintained a signature style, Vinod Rathod not adapted his own voice but always had a motive to match the personality of each actor’s particular character. His versatility made him a favorite in the 90s, delivering hits like Aisi Deewangi, Khal Nayak Hoon Main, Koi Na Koi Chahiye and more.

In a throwback interview with Lehren Podcast, Vinod Rathod spoke about the same and his approach to playback singing. He shared an incident from the film Hum Kisise Kum Nahin where he initially recorded a song without knowing Amitabh Bachchan would be in the film. Once the superstar was confirmed, Vinod made sure to dub the song again, adjusting his voice to suit Bachchan’s larger-than-life presence. This, he believes, is what sets apart a great playback singer – the ability to bring a character to life through voice alone.

Vinod Rathod also shared his thoughts on the changing music industry. According to him, every song has a time limit. He believes today’s songs often fail to make a lasting impact because they lack strong compositions and memorable lyrics. In the past, songs had a lasting emotional connection with audiences, but today’s fast-paced music industry moves on quickly, making it harder for tracks to stay relevant.

Despite his immense success, Vinod Rathod never ventured into making independent albums. He feels that albums are mostly created by singers who don’t fully understand music. In his opinion, record labels promote albums for a short period, and once the hype fades, the singers often disappear from the industry for months or even years until they release something new. This, he believes, is not the path for a true playback singer.

For those who want to dive deeper into Vinod Rathod’s perspective on playback singing and the evolving music industry, the full interview is available to watch below.
