Vadh 2 Movie Review:
The arrival of Keshav (Aksshay Dogra) who picks up two cute puppies, is such a brutal piece of writing that even before he utters a word, you hate him. You want to kill him.
The writing, along with direction that’s in complete control of every character and every situation, makes Jaspal Singh Sandhu’s second outing with Shambhunath Mishra (Sanjay Mishra) and Manju Singh (Neena Gupta) an intriguing watch as details come out in trickles.
Sandhu and co-writer Neha Shitole begin with a preamble set in 1994. A young woman is sentenced for a double murder. No words spoken by her.
Once the opening credits settle down, there’s a bit more action, a few more words. All in a jail.
As you watch, you question.
Manju’s a senior prisoner, comfortably settled. She’s struck a rapport with a lady jailor with whom she has a tipple or two and there’s camaraderie. Manju also has Shambhu (Sanjay Mishra), a male jail employee, on the other side of the wall who visits her. Give it to Sandhu that chemistry exists between Shambu and Manju even though there’s a wall between them. But who exactly are they?
There isn’t much time to linger on that as other jail elements enter. A crisp new jailor Prakash Singh (Kumud Mishra) has taken charge, out to enforce rules. Politically connected Keshav, as cruel as ever, hate-worthy as a prisoner with privileges. Shambhu, a low-level sarkari employee who steals vegetables, smuggles a bottle or two in and out of jail, enjoys the free electricity in his quarters.
It’s when the jailor is provoked into action against Keshav where he belts and beats the prisoner black and blue that the intrigue builds up. The arrival of Ateet Singh (Amitt K Singh), the inspector investigating the disappearance of Keshav from jail, entices the viewer to crack the case along with him.
That’s when dots sprinkled all over begin to connect.
Jaspal Singh Sandhu retains the spirit and sur of the 2022 original but tells you a new crime story with a narration that brings in social wickedness and moral dilemma without preaching any of it.
With a background score (Advait Kemlekar) that enhances mood but doesn’t intrude, a hat tip to the casting director (Vicky Sidana) is required for the impressive performances of instantly hate-able Keshav whose disappearance is a relief, and the canny, tenacious investigation by Ateet Singh who takes it to a conclusion. The impactful work of Aksshay Dogra and Amitt K Singh add a sparkle to the storytelling with of course the sturdy support of Neena Gupta, Sanjay Mishra and Kumud Mishra who are in total sync with who they are and what’s going on.
One offkey note is Hindi cinema’s current obsession with spotlighting prejudicial caste divides. To such an extent that the cause of the twin murders of 1994 could have been any personal friction but just to justify it, odd and stray references to caste are force-fit into dialogues which don’t even sound organic.
But Jaspal Singh Sandhu is a filmmaking talent to keep track of, the second edition a notch better than the first.
Vadh 2 – Watch Or Not?: There’s a carry home feeling as crime and conscience linger like a debate without a conclusion. I’d say, don’t miss it.
