Explore the five most notable films of 1980 along with their lesser-known details.

Qurbani is a musical romantic action thriller film from 1980, produced, directed, co-written by, and featuring Feroz Khan in the lead role. The film also stars Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman, and Amjad Khan. Originally scheduled for release on June 27, 1980, it was set to compete with Karz; however, the unexpected passing of Sanjay Gandhi on June 23, 1980, led to a one-week postponement.

Ultimately, it premiered on June 30, 1980, receiving an overwhelming response and becoming the year’s biggest hit, thus earning the status of a blockbuster. It was the highest-grossing film of 1980 and garnered two Filmfare Awards. Additionally, Qurbani produced the best-selling soundtrack album in India for that year and ranked as the sixth best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the 1980s.

Feroz Khan had initially approached Amitabh Bachchan for the role of Amar, but due to scheduling conflicts, Vinod Khanna took on the role, proving to be an excellent choice that greatly contributed to the film’s success.

Aasha is a Hindi drama film released in 1980, produced and directed by J. Om Prakash. The film features performances by Jeetendra, Reena Roy, and Rameshwari, with music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It achieved significant commercial success, being classified as a “Blockbuster” at the box office. Over time, Aasha has gained recognition as a cult classic.

Notably, the film marks the first on-screen appearance of J. Om Prakash’s grandson, Hrithik Roshan, who was just six years old at the time. He made a memorable impression by dancing spontaneously during a song sequence while visiting his grandfather’s set.

Ram Balram is a Hindi action thriller film from 1980, directed by Vijay Anand. The cast includes prominent actors such as Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, and Rekha.

Dostana, also released in 1980, is a Hindi action-drama film crafted by the renowned writing duo Salim–Javed, produced by Yash Johar, and helmed by director Raj Khosla. The film features Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Zeenat Aman in leading roles. It achieved significant commercial success, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing film of 1980, following Qurbani, Aasha, and Ram Balram.

Shaan is a Hindi action crime film released in 1980, directed by Ramesh Sippy, with a story crafted by the renowned duo Salim–Javed, following the immense success of Sholay in 1975. This film featured an ensemble cast that included Sunil Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Raakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Bindiya Goswami, Mazhar Khan, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Ramesh Sippy aimed to reunite the cast from Sholay; however, due to scheduling conflicts, Sunil Dutt took on a role originally intended for Sanjeev Kumar, Bindiya Goswami replaced Hema Malini, and Shashi Kapoor stepped in for Dharmendra. At the time of its release, Shaan was the most expensive Indian film ever produced, and while it performed moderately at the box office initially, it later achieved considerable success during subsequent screenings.
