The Hema Committee report has stirred significant discussion regarding sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. While Mohanlal and Mammootty have voiced their support for addressing these issues, Tamil actors have had varied responses to the ongoing debate.
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth recently made headlines for his reaction to questions about the Hema Committee report. During his arrival at Chennai airport, Rajinikanth was approached by reporters who asked him about setting up the committee within Tamil film industry looking after harassment issues.
Rajinikanth seemed totally unfamiliar with the topic and responded, “I don’t know…I don’t know anything about that. Sorry.” The video of his response quickly circulated on social media, with some Reddit users finding his reaction amusing and others questioning whether he was aware but chose not to comment.
In contrast, actor Jiiva had a different reaction. At a recent event, Jiiva was confronted by media about the Hema Committee report. Jiiva seemed frustrated, as he wanted to keep the focus on the positive aspects of the event. He stated, “We’ve come here for a good event, so let’s say good things. I’ve come to Theni after a long time. I’m coming here after shooting for a movie called Thenavattu. A lot of things are happening in a lot of industries. Your job is to gather news. Our job is to maintain a good atmosphere. As actors, we bring a smile to many people’s faces, and we have come here for that reason.”
Jiiva also claimed that there are no harassment issues within the Tamil film industry. Soon after this comment drew criticism from singer Chinmayi Sripada, who took to social media to express her concern and tweeted, “I really do not understand how they are saying sexual harassment does not exist in Tamil Industry. HOW?”
The Hema Committee report, released by the Kerala state government, details disturbing cases of sexual exploitation within the Malayalam film industry. It reveals that some women have been pressured to offer sexual favors in exchange for opportunities in the industry.
