The first time Johnny Depp physically assaulted his former partner Amber Heard was when she laughed at a tattoo on his arm that had been altered to read “wino for ever”, the high court in London has been told.

Johnny Depp’s first physical attack on his former girlfriend Amber Heard was revealed to the high court in London when she pointed at a tattoo on his arm that had been changed to read “wino for ever.”

The allegation, strongly refuted by Depp, who has admitted to alcohol issues, was put to him in his libel lawsuit against the Sun on the of his evidence.

During their four-year relationship, Depp, 57, has repeatedly denied physical assault on Heard and claims damages from the paper and its executive editor, Dan Wootton after running a story describing him as a “wife beater.”

Sasha Wass QC, representing the Sun, told court Depp that he had a tattoo on his neck, which used to read “Winona for ever,” tattoed during his previous relationship with Winona Ryder. The tattoo was modified to read “wino for ever” after their relationship ended, the court heard.

Depp had “fallen off the wagon” in 2013, Wass said, and was taking substances and alcohol. “Ms Heard laughed at that tattoo,”  she said.“You were in fact acting like a wino and an alcoholic and felt very sensitive.”

Depp agreed to say “I was dispirited, after 160 days or so I had broken my sobriety.” He did not remember clearly, he said, Heard made a joke about the tattoo provoking an argument.

Wass put it to him, “You then slapped Ms Heard across the face and that was the first time it happened.”  Totally three times he slapped her, Wass alleged, because Heard didn’t answer but just stared at him.

Depp replied, “It’s not true. It didn’t happen … I didn’t hit her.”

Heard has submitted details of 14 occasions during their relationship when she claims she was assaulted by Depp. He denies ever hitting her.

Depp accused Heard of setting up a “hoax” because of “patently untrue”.

The court was told it would hear a few of the cross-examination in private, whereby the media would not be allowed to publish.
