Shocking! Malayalam Film Industry’s Actresses Face Sexual Harassment: Justice Hema Committee Report Revelations

The Justice Hema Committee uncovers shocking harassment cases within the Malayalam Film Industry's dark side.

The Justice Hema Committee has released a startling report after five years of in-depth investigation into the sexual harassment and exploitation faced by Malayalam Film Industry’s female actors. The report, aimed at safeguarding artists, has sent shockwaves through both the public and government with its revelations.

Released on Monday, the report was handed over to the government, and a copy was shared with the media under the RTI Act. The committee, led by Justice Hema, was horrified by the accounts of harassment shared by women working in the Malayalam Film Industry. The main report consists of 296 pages, with clauses 48, 49, and 165 to 169 removed to protect privacy.

The report uncovers cruel incidents and unwanted advances faced by female artists even before projects commence. It details how actresses are harassed on set, including being disturbed by intoxicated individuals, making the situation both shocking and horrifying. While many women remained silent out of fear for their lives, several brave individuals came forward to share their experiences through this report.

The report also reveals that actresses who resisted casting couch advances were often blacklisted and thrown out of the industry. Additionally, the report mentions, in coded language, the names of actresses who compromised themselves for roles. Numerous testimonies indicate that sexual demands are commonly linked to employment opportunities in the Malayalam Film Industry’s complex and often exploitative system.

A particularly shocking aspect of the report is the suggestion that the industry is under the control of a “criminal gang,” though the exact identity of this group remains unclear. In 2019, the government appointed a panel to study the mistreatment of women in the Malayalam Film Industry, following the high-profile assault case of an actress in 2017 involving popular actor Dileep, as well as discussions on gender inequality.

The report highlights the widespread nature of these issues, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of female professionals in the industry. Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cheriyan announced that the government would convene a cinema conclave within the next two months to address and resolve these pressing issues. However, the opposition Congress expressed shock over the committee’s findings and questioned why the government had kept the report under wraps for so long.

The Malayalam Film Industry’s reputation has been growing rapidly, with one blockbuster after another earning praise for its naturalistic narratives and compelling storytelling. However, these revelations come as a shock to Mollywood fans, tarnishing the industry’s image. The report’s opening lines caution, “Do not trust what you see; even salt looks like sugar,” underscoring the deceptive nature of appearances.

In conclusion, the report categorically mentions the need to file FIRs in such cases, as many victims are too afraid to come forward. Amidst these bold revelations, there is an urgent call for swift and decisive action to protect the rights and dignity of women in the Malayalam Film Industry.
