Rekha Considered Herself Married to Amitabh: Umrao Jaan Director’s Shocking Revelation

Rekha's timeless film 'Umrao Jaan' returned to theaters on Friday. Directed by Muzaffar Ali, this iconic classic is regarded as a jewel in the actress's career and one of her most unforgettable performances. Nevertheless, similar to many aspects of Rekha's life, 'Umrao Jaan' also had a connection to the Big B.

The director of Umrao Jaan, Muzaffar Ali, has once again ignited curiosity regarding Rekha’s profound emotional connection with Amitabh Bachchan. With the film set to be re-released in 4K on June 27, 2025, fresh insights have surfaced about the off-screen interactions during its filming in 1981.

In the book Rekha: The Untold Story by Yasser Usman, Muzaffar Ali shares that during the filming in Delhi, Bachchan frequently visited the set. Amitabh Bachchan would come and sit on our sets while we were shooting Umrao Jaan in Delhi. Rekha employed Urdu expressions such as “inko” and “inhone” — pronouns that are typically used by a married woman when referring to her husband. Ali interpreted this as Rekha emotionally perceiving herself as Bachchan’s wife and affectionately believing that he should have married her.

During the production of the 1981 film Umrao Jaan, director Muzaffar Ali encountered considerable obstacles, primarily due to the intermittent absences of lead actress Rekha from the filming location. There were whispers within the industry suggesting that the renowned actress was frequently engaged in personal appointments, particularly with a well-known superstar, which adversely affected the shooting timetable. Rekha’s vanishing acts during pivotal filming moments posed a persistent challenge for the production crew, compelling the director to adjust and manage interruptions amid escalating public intrigue.

This combination of cinematic excellence and real-life narrative continues to enthrall viewers—even after four decades. The 4K re-release of Umrao Jaan not only showcases Rekha’s enduring talent but also revives one of Bollywood’s most lasting romantic tales.

The occasion showcased a guest list filled with stars, featuring Mira Rajput, AR Rahman, Anil Kapoor, Hema Malini, Muzaffar Ali, Talat Aziz, Ila Arun, Mahima Chaudhry, and Raj Babbar. The celebration, alive with nostalgia and respect, represented a pivotal moment for Indian cinema as a cherished classic made its return to theaters with improved visual splendor.
