‘Manjummel Boys’: Here Is The Reason Behind Movie’s Magical Success

Kamal Haasan & a song from the movie Gunna has helped "Manjummel Boys" to run all over the internet. This Malayalam language film has collected over Rs. 100 crore at the box office.

The Malayalam movie “Manjummel Boys” climax scene and that old song “Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan” are trending on the internet. It might sound surprising that the movie hasn’t been released in Hindi and despite the language barrier; it has grossed a bulky amount at the box office. The main element which drives the huge audience towards this film is none other than Kamal Haasan.

What’s In The Movie?

Chidambaram directed Manjummel Boys was released on 22 February in Tamil and Malayalam. For the unversed, the movie is about a group of friends embarking on a trip to Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu. They visit Devil’s Kitchen, i.e. the famous Guna Caves featured in Kamal Haasan’s romantic thriller “Gunaa”. But one of them falls into a cave and then the rest of the movie revolves around the friends’ attempts to save their friend. This survival thriller is based on a true story that happened in 2006.

Kamal Haasan & Identified Factors

The director smartly incorporates the Gunaa movie factor into the film. Kamal Haasan’s Gunaa is a well-known movie in Tamil. Also, after that movie, fascination for Gunaa caves increased amongst ordinary people. Kamal Haasan’s dialogue from that movie, “This is not human love that mere mortal will understand. It’s much beyond. Real divine”, has been used in Manjummel Boys to give an identified touch to the movie. Because all Kamal Haasan fans out there want to relive the moment once in their life. They want to scream this dialogue at Guna Caves.

The main reason behind the tremendous success of the film is the iconic song “Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan”. This song from Gunaa featuring Kamal Hassan and Roshini depicts the emotion of love. And hence Chitambaram used this song in Manjummel Boys to depict the love between friends and the warmth of their friendship. Friendship is the core behind the story. Effective use of this song is the prime cause of the popularity of film with regional audiences. In addition to that, the casting of the film is another thing which convinced the audience to watch it. There are no heroic faces in the movie. The entire cast looks like one among us and their bond seems real, which appeals to the audience.

Admiration by Kamal Haasan

Even Kamal Haasan himself appreciated the movie and the team work. He set up a special screening for his loved one and invited the entire team of Manjummel Boys to the screening. Talking about the production process of the film, the set was built ditto as it was difficult to shoot at Guna Caves with the crew of nearly 200 people.

There is a huge fandom of Kamal Haasan in Tamil as well as Malayalam and Telugu films, which has driven this movie to another level. Kamal Hassan and Gunna are an integral part of Manjummel Boys, which garnered the astonishing amount of Rs. 100 crore grossed.
