9 Hollywood Movies Which Are Inspired From Bollywood

Be it music, plots, character names or movie posters, Bollywood has often been accused of lifting elements from the West. While some prefer to call it an inspiration, others look at it as blatant plagiarism.

We are sure everyone is sick and tired of hearing how Bollywood movies have been duplicated or inspired by Hollywood movies. But did you know that this happens the other way around as well? So here are 9 Hollywood flicks that were inspired –

A Common Man (2013)- A Wednesday (2008) – Chandran Rutnam had to cast Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley to pull off Naseeruddin Shah’s character from A Wednesday. A Common Man was not just inspired but was an official remake of Neeraj Pandey’s masterpiece

Delivery Man (2013)- Vicky Donor (2012) – The only difference between the two movies the fact that Vince Vaughn’s sperm donations amounted to a total of 533 kids being born as compared to Ayyushman’s 53. But the basic idea of the film, sperm donation, has been inspired by Vicky Donor.

Fear (1996)- Darr (1993) – Apart from the direct translation of the name and the love triangle, the epic scene of the stalker, Shahrukh Khan, carving K-K-K-Kiran’s name on his chest has also been adapted by James Foley in his American thriller, Fear.

Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! (2004)- Rangeela (1995) – Well the best friend may not be played by Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan but the basic plot of the movie is a girl caught in a love triangle between her best friend and a movie star.

Kill Bill (2003)- Abhay (2001) – Though the plot differs this famous thriller by Quentin Tarantino had action sequences which he himself told Anurag Kashyap were inspired by the Kamal Hassan-starrer Abhay. Abhay was the Hindi adaptation of Aalavandhan, a 2001 Tamil film which also starred Kamal Hassan.

Pearl Harbor (2001)- Sangam (1964) – The Hollywood was less about the events of Pearl Harbour but more about a romantic love triangle between two best friends and a girl. Plots for both movies are fairly similar and the only difference between the two movies was that Sangam had only one friend as a pilot whereas its Hollywood counterpart had both.

Leap Year (2010)- Jab We Met (2007) – Though the makers of Leap Year claimed the movie was not inspired by Jab We Met but bubbly, highly-talkative girl on her way to propose to her boyfriend meets a stranger and shares a hotel room with him who fall in love, get separated but eventually reunite and get married. Sounds similar?

Just Go With It (2011)- Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005) – Jennifer Aniston plays the role of Sushmita Sen while Salman Khan’s role is played by Adam Sandler and actress Brooklyn Decker plays the role of Katrina Kaif. Both the movies were hit and had similar plot lines.

Hitch (2005)- Chhoti Si Baat (1975) – We are all aware that the Bollywood movie Partner is said to be a copy of Hitch. But it looks like Hitch itself was inspired by the plot of Chhoti Si Baat where a guy who fails to woo a girl takes help of a man who makes it his profession to help people with similar problems.

5 Biggest Bollywood Disappointments Of 2018

The year 2018 has proved that content is the ultimate king in the world of cinema right now and gone are the days where having a star was enough for the audience to flock the theaters. While 2018 has been a pretty exciting year for Bollywood, we also saw few films that turned out to be big let downs.

Though many of them featured an exciting cast and more of a mainstream story-line, ended up being a major disappointment. So here are 5 of the biggest letdowns of Bollywood that we have witnessed in 2018.

Aiyaary – The movie had a stellar cast comprising of Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Siddharth Malhotra and helmed by Neeraj Pandey who has had an impressive track record of delivering hits like A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby and many more. But thanks to a half-baked plot and sluggish pace, this film is a thriller without thrills and although having such good actors there simply was not enough in the plot for them to work with.

Race 3 – Expectations were pretty high from the third installment of this famous franchise ever since Salman joined the cast. However, things definitely didn’t go as expected. Despite a smashing start at the box-office, the collections of the film took a significant dip because of poor word of mouth. The biggest problem of the film is that everything feels forced and by everything we mean everything! The story had no direction whatsoever, characters lacked any sort of substance and even the songs and dialogues seemed completely forced.

Fanney Khan – Fanney Khan is an official remake of the Belgian film Everybody’s Famous. While the original film was known for the dark comedy the remake was too melodramatic. While the performances were appreciated, the movie lacked a certain identity. On one hand, it showed the struggle of a common man who wants his daughter to be a star singer while on the other it resorted to screwball comedy to make you laugh.

Namaste England – People were excited to watch the sizzling pair of Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra once again on the big screen after their debut Ishqzaade but sadly Namaste England could not live up to the expectations. A complicated story-line with extremely cliched dialogues sometimes being unintentionally funny made for a bad watch. Coupled with poor remixed songs, the movie was a huge flop.

Thugs Of Hindostan – Ever since the mega-project was announced, the buzz around TOH had been unreal as it was the first ever collaboration of Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. However, this movie proved that despite having a massive budget, grand star cast and mind-numbing visual effects simply aren’t enough to deliver success. While Aamir and Amitabh impressed in their roles, the plot was extremely flat which prevented the story from moving forward. Also, a three-hour runtime of the film makes it seem extremely stretched which further added fuel to the fire.

5 things that are extremely controversial and provocative about the first look of Shakeela Biopic

Richa Chadha is wearing nothing but gold: Oozing empowerment in a strong stance and a strong look, Richa embraces the appeal of Shakeela in an outfit which was custom made out of gold.

Unfazed by the name tags and discrimination: She was called fat by the press and often her own colleagues in the media. The press often called her the Amazon woman and claimed that they didn’t understand her stardom although the public loved her. It was also unusual that a dusky woman became a superstar, so she and as often called dark.

Religious and moral policing!: Reportedly, Shakeela was attacked by an Islamic group towards the end of the career, for setting a bad example for Muslim girls. Some reports suggest that it was also a plan to assassinate her. That’s why the line scribbled in Hindi, “Ek Khan Hokar Aaisa Kaam?”

The wall inscription in Tamil and Malayalam: We did a little investigation and found that the Tamil phrase written on the walls loosely translates into the “F-word, while the Malayalam word translates as ‘prostitute.’

Inappropriate graphics on the wall!: Is it just us or is their a picture of male genitals on the wall, that has been scratched out?

It’s a pretty ballsy move to stand in front of this wall for the first look and taking on every critic that Shakeela had to face.

5 Bollywood Movies Made On The LGBTQ Community

It was a landmark day on 6th September 2018 when the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality which was immediately hailed by the minority LGBT community and it was equally celebrated by the Bollywood industry.

So let us take a look at some of the films which have portrayed the real, humane side LGBTQ community and not made characters to make fun or humiliate them in a film.

Margarita In A Straw – Kalki Koechlin’s portrayal of a character with cerebral palsy, who eventually figures out her sexuality was highly appreciated. She played a lesbian, who falls in love with Sayani Gupta’s character. The emotions displayed in the film, directed by Shonali Bose, were real and tangible.

Fire – This 1996 release starring Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi was way ahead of its time. Deepa Mehta wove an emotional story about two women, who find solace in each other, after being neglected by their husbands. The film faced a lot of criticism from radical groups when it released. Perhaps, it was ahead of its times.

Bombay Talkies – The short story directed by Karan Johar, in the anthology Bombay Talkies, is titled Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh. It stars Rani Mukerji, Randeep Hooda, and Saqib Saleem and depicted the complications that come by hiding one’s sexual preferences.

Kapoor & Sons – Probably the title of the first commercial film ever, to portray a gay character sensitively, should be given to this film directed by Shakun Batra. Fawad Khan’s intense character manifested a dignity, which Hindi cinema’s ‘mocked’ gay characters lacked. The movie has also presented the coming out of the closet for Fawad with the perfect amount of passion.

Padmaavat – Ranveer Singh essayed the character of tyrant Alauddin Khilji with utmost perfection in the film. However, in his personal life, the ruler was said to be bisexual and the film shows a full-fledged scene as well as a song that is dedicated to the relationship he shared with slave Malik Kafur. Jim Sarbh, as Kafur, beautifully showcased a helpless lover, ready to do anything for his master.
