“No One Is Competition for Me”: Bhanupriya On Overshadowing Her South Competitors

Bhanupriya, a veteran actress known for her versatility in the Telugu and Tamil film industries, had a remarkable career spanning over four decades now. With more than 155 films to her credit, she continues to act in movies even in 2024. Bhanupriya made her Bollywood debut in 1986 with the film Dosti Dushmani, sharing the screen with legendary actor Jeetendra Kapoor. The following year, she starred alongside him again in the superhit film Khudgarz. However, Bhanupriya later revealed that she will choose roles wisely post her lack in screen space.

In an exclusive throwback interview with Lehren, Bhanupriya roped in a glamorous photoshoot that captured her magnificent aura and captivating beauty. During the conversation, she was asked why she chose a small role in ‘Khudgarz’ despite having played extraordinary roles in the South before entering Bollywood, including her Telugu debut ‘Sitaara’ (1984), which won three National Awards.

When filmmakers offered Bhanupriya the role in ‘Khudgarz’, she told that director Rakesh Roshan is a close friend of Jeetendra and although the film featured two other heroines, her role would be highlighted. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I will now be more careful in choosing roles because such small roles might be risky and can affect the start of my career.”

Further, when asked about the biggest heroines like Sridevi, Jaya Prada, and Meenakshi Seshadri, who entered Bollywood after coming from the South Indian film industry, and whether she feels any competition with them, Bhanupriya stated, “No one is competition for me.” Instead, she added that she wants to showcase “What Bhanupriya is!

Bhanupriya went on to carve out a successful niche for herself, starring in a variety of roles and earning accolades, including three Nandi Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and two Filmfare Awards South. In Bollywood, she appeared in films like Bhabhi, Kasam Vardi Ki, Zahreelay and Tamacha, surprising fans with her performances.
