Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was arrested this morning in an abetment to suicide case. Goswami was seen being pushed into the police van. He claimed that he was assaulted by police at his home while being taken away. He was arrested in the abetment to suicide case of 2018, which had been closed earlier and has now been reopened. A police official said that a 53-year-old architect and his mother committed suicide in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues by Republic TV.
People on Twitter are condemning the arrest of Arnab Goswami.
Film critic Sumit Kadel wrote on Twitter, “You may hate #ArnabGoswami & his style of journalism but you shouldn’t support the misuse of power against him or any other journalist. Today its him, tomorrow it can be your favorite journalist. Arrest of Arnab is absolutely wrong, glad editors guild of India took a correct stand.”
Goswami was pulled by the hair, threatened and not allowed to drink water after 20-30 policemen barged into his house.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar condemned the arrest of Arnab Goswami. He tweeted, “We condemn the attack on press freedom in #Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this.”
A user wrote that terrorist Ajmal Kasab was treated more fairly by the Mumbai Police than the way they are treating Arnab Goswami.
