The suit asks for restraint as Republic TV airs confidential news regarding the TRP scam.

In a new but not surprising turn of events in the TRP scam scandal, Republic TV has gotten itself in trouble again.

This time from Former Assistant Police Commissioner of Police (ACP) Iqbal Shaikh.

Shaikh has approached the city civil court to restraint Republic TV’s Editor in Chief Arnab Goswami from airing TRP scam related details and materials on air.

An FIR has been lodged regarding this matter.

Iqbal Shaikh also filed a defamation suit against Arnab Goswami for making malicious comments against the police force in relation to the TRP scandal.

The hearing of the suit is likely to be on Wednesday.

The Suit Filed

Shaikh, in the suit filed through advocate Abha Singh. He alleged that

“When a case is under investigation under statutory provisions, the Defendant No. 1 (Goswami) cannot be granted the liberty to discuss his own case and arbitrate it in his own TV channels by defaming Mumbai Police.”

Shaikh has accused Goswami for conducting debates and telecasting stories that could mislead the investigation. It could also influence the investigation.

“The Plaintiff submits that the Defendant No. 1 has transgressed his limits as an owner of two most popular TV Channels and has started pursuing his own agenda by being the Editor-in-Chief and by blurting out large sermons about his own case which is under probe by a statutory body,” read the suit.

Republic TV is not the only one. Mumbai Commissioner Param Bir Singh has also named two other channels.

So far six people have been arrested by the Mumbai Police in regards to the scam. The scam actually involves bribing homeowners whose TV viewing is monitored to ensure that certain channels get higher ratings. The ratings help get advertiser preferences while placing commercials. This is a Multi- Crore scam according to the police.

The channel moved the high court seeking to quash the FIR registered in the case. It also requested its transfer from Mumbai Police to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
