Mere Husband Ki Biwi Movie Critic Review:

Ankur Chaddha (Arjun Kapoor) has nightmares about ex-wife Prableen (Bhumi Pednekar), long after they’ve been divorced.

Closing a real estate deal for his dad (Shakti Kapoor) in picturesque Rishikesh, Ankur bumps into the glamorous Antara Khanna (Rakul Preet Singh) who was out of reach for him in their college days. She is rich, swings between teaching handgliding and practising sports physiotherapy, and she’s single.

He goes into flashbacks to tell her (and the audience) what happened with the bhootni incarnate in his nightmares.

Antara and Prableen have history too, flashing back to college days, to friction in a queue to pick up a form. Memories of the taunts at Antara’s leg-revealing shorts and her retorts to Prableen, haven’t faded with time.

A second jab at happiness beckons when romance blooms. Ankur even overcomes his fear of heights to propose to Antara dramatically, dropping from a parachute in front of a mall.

But Prableen with her menacing “Baby, Baby” has returned, her memory conveniently blanking out their divorce.

In a twisted version of Play Misty For Me, Antara plays aa bail mujhe maar by biting Prableen’s bait, accepting a challenge and inviting the disturbed ex-wife to their wedding in Scotland.

It’s a story (by Vashu Bhagnani) that has possibilities for comic chills.

But Mudassar Aziz’s writing and direction are just not able to catch the right sur, making it a tedious watch fraught with unconvincing situations.

Why would Antara allow an obvious schemer who’s out to wreck her love story, join their celebration in Scotland and create tension? Why doesn’t she let her brother (Dino Morea) and parents know about Prableen’s goal? Why would Ankur go alone to Prableen’s room after one of her “episodes” when any of the family members, Antara too, could’ve joined him to comfort the ex-wife? If Prableen was playing them all along, why did she want Ankur when she had new man Rajveer (Aditya Seal) in her life? And if she maniacally, and inexplicably, desired Ankur after a hellish marriage, how come a change of heart for a happy ending?

Mudassar makes attempts at comedy with “Aaoooo” as BG sound when Shakti Kapoor appears. With a girl called Natalie becoming ‘Naatu Naatu’. With dialogues about good luck on a mangalvaar. With Antara’s lovemaking ‘aahs’ being matched by Prableen’s loud coughing.

But somehow nothing lands to make it rollicking. Harsh Gujral cast as Ankur’s friend Rehaan is annoying without amusing and put in only for minority’s sake (there is a dialogue about him being a minority in what’s supposed to be a comic moment). Parties, sangeet, dumb charades, everything’s there but no emotional connect, no chemistry. No swinging music either, with the main cast dancing to a remix of the 1990 chartbuster ‘Gori hai kalaiyaan’ during the end credits.

Mere Husband Ki Biwi Movie – Watch Or Not?:  It may be wiser to wait for it to stream on OTT.
