One of pop music’s most influential and enduring figures, Katy Perry will be honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). This prestigious award, often considered the MTV VMAs’ highest honour, recognises artists who have profoundly impacted the music video landscape through their artistry, innovation, and influence.
MTV announced Perry as this year’s recipient, highlighting her decade-spanning career filled with chart-topping hits and groundbreaking music videos. Known for her colourful and imaginative visuals, Perry has consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity in music videos, from the whimsical world of California Gurls to the empowering narrative of Roar.
Paramount+ Music, chief content officer, Bruce Gillmer said “Katy’s prowess will be on full display live on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits.”
Since bursting onto the scene with her 2008 hit I Kissed a Girl, Perry has released a string of successful albums and singles, earning numerous awards and accolades along the way. Her music videos have become cultural touchstones, known for their bold aesthetics and powerful messages.
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award has a storied history, with past recipients including legendary artists such as Madonna, Beyoncé, and Justin Timberlake. Perry’s inclusion in this elite group cements her legacy as one of the most influential pop stars of her generation. Katy Perry has won over five VMAs and she hosted the 2017 VMA. The 2024 MTV VMAs are set to take place on September 11th, at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York with Perry’s tribute likely to be one of the night’s most anticipated moments. In addition to receiving the award, Perry will deliver a special performance, which will undoubtedly be a highlight of the evening. Earlier, the event was supposed to be aired on 10th September 2024, but it got postponed due to a presidential debate between former president, Donald Trump and Vice-President, Kamala Harris, which will be aired on September 10.
