Kate Winslet is ready to explore a new side of filmmaking as she takes on the role of director for the first time. The Oscar-winning actress, best known for the films like Titanic, Quills, The Reader, and Hamlet, will also produce and star in the project, which features an ensemble cast including Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall and Helen Mirren. The screenplay is penned by Joe Anders, Winslet’s son with ex-husband Sam Mendes, while Kate Solomon will co-produce alongside Kate.
Netflix describes Goodbye June as a drama with a mix of emotion and humour, following a group of siblings who come together under expected and challenging circumstances. The movie will soon begin filming in the UK. Kate Solomon, who produced Lee, a biopic on war photographer Lee Miller, continues her collaboration with Winslet. Lee earned Winslet a Golden Globe nomination and was also in the running for a BAFTA.

During a podcast conversation on How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Kate Winslet shared her thoughts on stepping into direction. She admitted she had long resisted the idea, mainly due to the time commitment. However, she now feels a responsibility to take on the role. “So many people on set have asked me why I’m not directing. I used to brush it off, but now I feel like if I don’t do it, I’d be letting other women down,” she said. Winslet also emphasized that the more women step into filmmaking, the more they inspire others.
She believes her years in the industry have given her the skills needed to take on this challenge. “I wouldn’t do it unless I knew I could do it properly,” she added.
In addition to Goodbye June, Kate Winslet was recently seen in the HBO series The Regime, for which she received another Golden Globe nomination. Now, with her first directorial venture, she is set to explore a new creative side.
