JEWEL THIEF: THE HEIST BEGINS Movie Review – Sophisticatedly Unoriginal

Sophisticatedly Unoriginal

Cool thief Rehan Roy and wicked killer Rajan Aulakh combine forces for the biggest heist ever. Should you fly all over Budapest, Mumbai, London to share their thrills? One thing’s for sure. It’s slick and stylish.

JEWEL THIEF: THE HEIST BEGINS Movie Critic Review:

The camera globetrots. Budapest, Istanbul, Mumbai, London.

Everybody’s cool. Rehan Roy (Saif Ali Khan), a fingersmith who’ll steal the necklace off your body or the mobile in your pocket with smart smoothness. A tad James Bondish too, the names of women in bed don’t matter. And he is the ultimate jewel thief, popular in the crime world as unmatched, unbeatable.

Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat), the Page 3 rich man. So unflinching cool that the rottweiler he fed with his hands as a puppy gets a bullet in its forehead for cosying up to Rehan. So cool that he’ll watch a piece of art on his wall and admire its splosh of colour. It’s real dried blood of a human he’d strangled for tattling on his offshore accounts. Deficit of trust brings out the underworld gangster in him.

Directors Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal use their lead performers and the camera to dazzle with style as Rehan and Rajan pull off the impossible heist of the Red Sun, a $500 crore diamond from an African billionaire on a world tour of his famous gem.

But Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor) the police officer from Mumbai is on Rehan’s tail.

Thickening it for mush is Rehan’s estranged dad Dr Roy (Kulbhushan Kharbanda).

In Rehan’s plot is Rajan’s wife Farah (Nikita Dutta) with a sob line of her own: “Rajan doesn’t play games, he plays with people’s lives.” But Rehan’s out to play Rajan.

The style stays consistent.

Laser beam security, passwords, Rehan outwitting Vikram and his nitwits (the usual pair of dumbo cops who keep eating and are as obvious as landing lights on a runway) and a climax up in the air where the plane veers between London and Istanbul to keep everyone guessing, are all laundry-list heist essentials.

A predictable, fun jewel heist (screenplay by David Logan) with a museum manager named Jennifer Lobo and a hotel room booked for Vijay Anand, the dialogues by Sumit Arora include, “A man takes such risks only for pyaar and parivar”, “Believe Santa Claus but not Rehan” with “Chu…” and eff strewn all over.

Hand-to-hand combats between Rehan-Vikram and Rehan-Rajan have energy, and the cool stays on even when Rajan has his last smoke before the big boom. What also stay are the solidity of ageing Saif Ali Khan who retains his wicked suaveness and Jaideep Ahlawat who can spill blood without a flinch. What doesn’t stay are any of the songs that come and go, mostly in the credits.

There’s a Dhoom-like ending where the cop (quite inefficient as it turns out) catches up with Rehan for just a moment. And you know they’ll be back as the heist will return with a sequel.

JEWEL THIEF: THE HEIST BEGINS Watch Or Not?: A harmless, time-pass watch on OTT with hefty performances and pleasing visuals.

JEWEL THIEF: THE HEIST BEGINS Review Score Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (i.e. 2.5/5)
