In 2014, actress Cameron Diaz upset her fans by stepping away from acting at the height of her career. Known for starring in hit movies like Vanilla Sky, Gangs of New York, In Her Shoes and many others, she was one of the biggest names in Hollywood during the early 2000s. And her sudden decision to leave the industry left many wondering why. Now, as she prepares for her return to the big screen, Diaz opened up about the reasons behind her break from acting.
At the recent Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, Cameron Diaz shared the emotional reasons behind her departure from Hollywood. She explained that she needed to step back from the industry to focus on herself and her personal life. “It was something I had to do,” she said. “I didn’t care about anyone’s opinions or offers. I needed to take control of my life and build the future I really wanted.”
During her time away, Cameron focused on her family. The actress married Good Charlotte rock band member Benji Madden in 2015 and they welcomed their first child through surrogacy in 2019. Earlier this year, they had their second child. In addition to building her family, Diaz also started a new venture as a businesswoman. In 2020, she co-founded Avaline, a vegan-friendly wine brand with her friend Katherine Power.
Now, after a few years of dedicating herself to her family and business, actress Cameron Diaz is ready to make her comeback. She explained that after spending a long time at home during the pandemic, her supportive husband encouraged her to return to acting. “He said it was time for me to follow my passion again,” Diaz shared. “I knew it was the right moment.”
Diaz is set to star alongside Jamie Foxx in the upcoming Netflix film Back In Action, scheduled for release in January 2025. The two have worked together before, in Annie (2014) and Any Given Sunday (1999), and fans are excited to see their reunion. Diaz is also rumoured to return for Shrek 5 and may star in a new dark comedy with Keanu Reeves titled Outcome.
