Himesh Reshammiya is one of the most successful musicians in Bollywood, known for delivering back-to-back chartbusters like Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, Aap Kaa Suroor and many more. While his unique singing style gained massive popularity, it also sparked criticism due to which many labelled him as a “nasal singer” and among the critics was none other than legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who once said she wanted to slap him! However, her reaction wasn’t the same as others. In a recent interview, Himesh Reshammiya recalled this incident and explained why Asha Bhosle was justified in feeling that way.
Why Did Asha Bhosle Want to Slap Himesh Reshammiya?
During the early 2000s, Himesh Reshammiya’s songs were everywhere, playing on every household speakers and radio. While he enjoyed immense success, some people criticized his voice calling it “nasal”. In an interview with Radio Nasha, Himesh reflected on how he initially tried to defend himself against such remarks but later realized his mistake. Recalling the controversy with Asha Bhosle , Himesh Reshammiya said, “Asha ji wala incident justified tha aur isliye maine unko sorry bhi kaha tha.” He explained that while performing at live shows, his songs were widely loved but a section of people kept calling his voice nasal. Himesh mentioned that in an attempt to justify his singing style, he had once said that even legendary and timeless composer R.D. Burman had a nasal tone.
This statement didn’t sit well with Asha Bhosle who was R.D. Burman’s wife. Reacting strongly, she said, “Isko thappad maarna chahiye.” Realizing his mistake, Himesh immediately apologized to her saying, “I’m sorry.” He later admitted, “That defense mujhe nahi karna chahiye tha. Balki uss waqt main yeh keh deta ‘Haan, yeh nasal hai’ toh baat hi khatam ho jati.” Looking back, he now proudly embraces the fact that his voice is unique and has contributed to his massive success.
Himesh Reshammiya’s journey in the music industry has been filled with highs and lows. Despite the criticism, he carved a niche for himself and continues to be a beloved artist.
