A timeline detailing the last days of Gene Hackman is starting to come to light through the data from the Oscar-winning actor’s pacemaker, which, according to authorities, suggests he passed away on February 17, more than a week prior to the discovery of his body and that of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their Santa Fe residence.
During a press conference on Friday afternoon, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared that they investigated Hackman’s pacemaker after finding the bodies of him and his wife. Shortly after the news of the deaths was reported, Santa Fe’s medical examiner announced that initial autopsies on the iconic actor revealed no signs of external injuries.
However, the pacemaker which was first mentioned on Friday, turned out to be the first major clue in determining the cause and manner of their deaths. Mendoza informed the scrum of reporters, “An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr. Hackman’s pacemaker, which revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025.… I think that is a very good assumption that was his last day of life.”
Information made public on Thursday suggested that the couple might have passed away sooner than previously thought. On Friday, the Sheriff’s Office provided a list of items that were taken from the couple’s residence when the search warrant was carried out. Among these items were two green cell phones, thyroid medication, medical records, and a monthly planner for 2025.
