Director Vikram Bhatt is one of those filmmakers who has been in the industry for a long time but remains underrated. Before making his directorial debut with Jaanam, he had already spent years working in the industry. However, his first film did not perform well including further forthcoming projects too , which were Madhosh, Gunehgar and Bambai Ka Babu, also failed to make an impact at the box office.
In a throwback interview with Lehren Podcast, director Vikram Bhatt spoke about his early struggles. When asked about to spill the beans about Jaanam not working well at box office, he went on revealing, “Jaanam is not close to my heart” and explained why: “Kyuki Jaanam mein maine as a director bahut si galtiya ki thi aur aaj agar main Jaanam dekhu toh mujhe lagta hai ke choice of subject se leke, choice of location, choice of actors sab wrong the.”
When asked about his early films back-to-back failing at the box office, he acknowledged, “Dekhiye, meri jo pehli 4 filmein thi unke baare mein toh khaas kuch keh nahi sakte kyuki, Jaanam, Madhosh, Gunehgar, Bambai Ka Babu, chaaron film meri chali nahi.” He further added that each film failed for different reasons.
Reflecting on his journey, director Vikram Bhatt admitted, “Main flop director tha.” He also shared an interesting perspective on how the industry perceives success and failure: “Industry yeh nahi sochti ki aap hit hai ya flop hai, par kehti hai aap hit hai flop hai.”
Vikram Bhatt’s journey is a testament to perseverance in the film industry. Despite initial setbacks, he learned from his mistakes and went on to direct successful films including the popular Raaz series. His story proves that failures can be stepping stones to success.
