Celebrity chef Kunal Kapur was granted a divorce by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, citing the cruelty he endured from his estranged wife. The court remarked that her behavior lacked dignity and empathy. Kapur’s appeal against the family court’s decision, which initially denied him a divorce, was successful.
The court emphasized that making reckless, defamatory, and humiliating allegations against a spouse in public constitutes cruelty under the law. The couple tied the knot in April 2008 and welcomed a son in 2012. In his plea, Kapur, who was once a judge on the television show MasterChef India, accused his wife of disrespecting his parents and subjecting him to humiliation.
Kapur, who tied the knot in 2008, alleged that his wife would frequently contact the police, threatening to spread rumors about him on social media as his public profile grew. The celebrity chef also asserted that during his filming for the Masterchef India show in 2016, his wife disrupted proceedings by entering the studio with their son, born in 2012, and causing disturbance.
In response to the incident, Kapur obtained a restraining order against her. However, his wife has refuted all accusations, stating that she sacrificed her career for the sake of her husband and family. She further alleged that her in-laws often criticized her for having a job instead of focusing solely on household duties.
